Weighty issues and options of dealing with them
If you were to conduct a short survey amongst workingmen and women in their early forties as to where they are spending money other than clothes and shopping, you will be surprised to find that the answer would be that they are spending money on weight reduction.
It is quite a funny thing to see that these people spend most of their waking up hours trying to earn money and the rest of the time in paying for the costly treatment to loose their weight.
There are many kinds of treatments and programs available in the market for reduction as well as management of weight. Now what most of the people do not realize is that there is a huge difference between weight reduction program and weight management program. Weight reduction refers to a one-time reduction of weight by means of different techniques. Weight management involves a holistic approach to weight reduction as well as maintaining the balanced newly reduced weight without allowing the body to revert back to the old weight.
Weight reduction management involves redefining your lifestyle including food habits and diet, exercising routine including body fitness as well as increasing metabolism rate, besides learning to balance work and life, relaxation and stress reduction techniques such as meditation and yoga etc.
Some of the methods used for weight loss include usage of drugs and supplements aiming at decrease of appetite; reduce stomach volume as well as blocking of fat absorption. These interventions are used only incase of obesity problems and not for normal weight reduction.
Normal weight reduction programs include dieting coupled with exercising under expert fitness experts or other activities such as swimming, jogging, aerobic dancing etc.
Some of the techniques involve surgical or invasive surgical procedures such as liposuction, Bariatric surgery, Vertical banded gastroplasty Laparoscopic gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, Biliopancreatic diversion. The first surgical treatment practiced for weight loss was the intestinal bypass 40 years ago but today this is no more practiced. The other techniques have been found to be more beneficial and safer.
All the above surgeries are based on two principles to aim at weight loss by restricting the volume of food that can be held in the stomach. The two types of such surgeries are Restrictive Surgery and Mal absorptive surgery.
Restrictive surgery involves procedure, which reduces the size of the stomach, where in a pat of the stomach is removed thereby the size of the stomach reduces and the amount of food that you are able to consume also reduces leading to better utilization of energy and consequent reduction of weight due to non-accumulation of fat in the body.
Mal absorptive surgery on the other hand involves reduction of small intestine or its capacity to digest and absorb the food. Currently surgeons are in favor of combining both by reducing capacity to hold food in the stomach and the mal absorption by the intestine to effectively reduce the weight loss.
Weight management task includes complete analysis of your body type, metabolism rate; history of health, genetic makeup, and your dietary habits coupled with lifestyle and many more factors. The approach to starting a weight loss and management program involves multidisciplinary approach and should be undertaken only under medical supervision.
